Competitive Information

The Woodbury Soccer Club (WSC) believes that player development is the key to long term success. As each player becomes a better “soccer player” we have provided them the foundation to enjoy whatever success they will choose for their future.   About 700 players on 47 teams will play for the club in 2008.

How does it work?
For those of you who may be new to the Club or to competitive soccer, WSC holds tryouts every fall to select teams for the competitive program. Tryouts occur in August.
We abide by the rules of our governing body, the Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (MYSA, www.mnyouthsoccer.org).
We strongly believe in and support the use of small sided games to promote player development. This means that our teams play the following formats:

Age Group
Format
Size Field
U9 & U10
6v6
40x50 yards
U11 & U12
8v8
60x70 yards
U13 and up
11v11
70x120 yards

Each game includes a goalkeeper for example 6v6 means 5 field players and 1 goalkeeper.

WSC seeks to field teams in as many of these age/levels as we can – in other words, regardless of your child's skill level, if he or she wants to really learn the game of soccer, you have come to the right place.
WSC is an “open club” – meaning any players who wish to join our club (regardless of place of residence) will be encouraged to do so, and no preference will be given based on location of residence. Nevertheless, the large majority (about 90%) of kids who chose to play with the WSC are from the greater Woodbury or surrounding areas. This allows the club to offer the characteristics of a community club and provide higher-level opportunities for our players that otherwise are only available through "super clubs." WSC does their best to place every committed player who tries out on a team at the appropriate level. Once on a team, all players have extensive opportunities to develop over the winter and summer months, as we provide winter and summer club training as part of your registration fees. Our top-level teams typically train over and above the club training in the off-season months.
Our director of coaching Peter Rivard leads these programs.
The WSC takes great pride in developing players. Supporting and providing what players need to grow and be successful will ultimately lead to strong teams. Team success at U9 and U10 doesn’t guarantee player success at U16 and U18. Players need to sufficiently develop their own skills in before team goals get placed before individual player needs. A nice side benefit to this player/team philosophy is that as players continue to develop together friendships grow and a club atmosphere grows.
Playing Season
The summer season starts in May and culminates with the district and state tournaments at the end of July. Teams also participate in a minimum of two or three weekend tournaments during the season. Our club is part of the MYSA's East district, which means our teams typically travel to away games at locations such as Stillwater, White Bear Lake, Mahtomedi, Hudson, St. Paul, Cottage Grove, and in some cases, River Falls and Eau Claire. Our home games are played at the Bielenberg Athletic Fields.
The MYSA also offers a shorter fall playing season.
Our teams who compete in the Midwest Regional League and Premier League will typically train year-round.
In addition, every year the Woodbury Soccer Club hosts the Woodbury Summer Classic, U13-U16 Tournament is May 16-18 and the U9-12 Tournament is June 20-22. More than 120 teams participated last year.

Anticipated Teams for 2008/09

WSC makes a commitment to offer teams to fit players' needs.  In some age groups WSC will be able to field multiple teams.  This happens very often at the younger ages but WSC will also field teams in our older age groups due to the strength of our club.

With over 50 competitive teams we have the place for you in our club.
